Mountaineering is the sport of climbing a mountain. The person active in this sport is called mountaineer. We now know what a mountaineer is and what mount is but what is a mountain. Mountains are larger than hills although the terms are interchangeable. The elevation however, is a large landmass that is larger and higher than any landmass around it. Mountains are above sea level and are formed due to the movements of the tectonic plates. Many of the world’s rivers have had their beginnings in mountains.

Prior to mount becoming a sport, mountains were climbed by people that lived near mountains as a matter of need. They needed to be fortified from evil spirits so they built altars on the tops of mountains to appease the elevation spirits and then they would be protected. Later the mountains were climbed to build watch towers and in more modern times mountains were climbed to build observation and meteoric stations.

Today mount is a sport for those that are hardy enough and in good physical upbeat to be active in. Determine of this sport is to reach the summit of whatever elevation they are going to climb. Although mount was finished by the ancient peoples today, in order to scale the wrinkled terrain in most mountains requires technical accumulation and the skills of a gymnast. There is a lesser mount sport requiring walking with the intent to enjoy nature. The latter is often referred to as hiking in English speaking countries.
